New Work

So it's Festival of Quilts next week and I'm officially sulking as I can't go. (Got to stay away from busy places because of the risk of catching a germ). Many of you will know that Linda and I should have been showing a big, brand new collection of work called This is Everything we Are. Sadly that has had to go on the back burner for a while, but the organisers of Festival have kindly said that they will welcome us back whenever I'm ready. I don't know when that'll be at the moment, but I'll be sure to keep you posted.

It'll be such a shame to miss the event this year as we've been part of every single Festival since the beginning and always look forward to catching up with familiar faces. Linda is hoping to visit and hang out on the Madeira stand for a while where she'll have some new quilts on display. I'll let you know when I do, the details on that so you can drop by and see her if you'd like to.

Meanwhile, I have been continuing with the work that was in progress before the diagnosis. When I chatted to Jamie about when, if ever, the exhibition might take place, and that I didn't know if I could work at my usual loony pace to get it ready, he suggested that I might like to try a slow and steady approach and just work when I could with the view to eventually having the work done. Well don't tell him, but he's probably right. At risk of casting aside my 'queen of the last minute' status I'm chipping away like a tortoise.

I finished this piece this morning. It's only small, about 13" x 15", so quite doable, even with all the closely worked quilting.

I'm loving how the dense stitch alters the surface.

It's a collaged arrangement including a piece of monoprinted paper, top left in the photo above.

The head is a monoprint on fabric. A technique I demonstrated on DMTV.

I added some digitally stitched circles too.

So a nice, satisfying finish. It just needs a trim and the plan is to mount it onto some sort of wooden panel. There are 15-18 of these panels at various stages so I hope when they are displayed they'll look quite good en masse.

Thanks for dropping by today.
Love Laura
xx

  1. Love the finished piece. I had to go back and click on the monoprinted paper to get a closer look. Very interesting. AND I cancelled by trip (itinerary) to the UK when you became ill and settled for meeting family instead. My DIL comes from Stafford upon Avon and we will be there during Festival. She "suggested" I might like to attend so perhaps I may encounter Linda at the Madeira booth. Hopefully next year you will be showing!! Be well my friend.

  2. I can't go to FOQ either because of a leg injury. Sooo fed up, I didn't get there last year and I had promised myself I wouldn't miss out again! It's great to see some of your work and I look forward to seeing it when you are fit and well again, you are an inspiration Laura, continuing to work as you are. I need to shake myself and get on with things, My group has a small exhibition in September at Snape Maltings in Suffolk, I have two and a half things made out of the required four and I have just realised I only have month to complete! Bless you. Marion x

  4. Even the Queen realizes when old ways need to change to better reflect the situation. I love this piece. I would have not known the upper left was paper. Be well and most importantly listen to your body. Hugs!

  5. I am so happy you are able to do some work but slowing down from the usual frantic pace, our bodies are wise and have ways of stopping us for our own benefit . A year ago I couldn’t walk for 6 months, ended with back surgery . Well that stopped me in my tracks because I was literally like an energizer bunny and I am 82 Now I am forced to slow down , don’t like it but like the price I paid even less. I shall miss seeing you at thevFestival. I am making a special trip this year from Canada especially to see you and Linda and your amazing work and attend your lecture. I am so glad Linda will be there at the Madeira stand I will be there to meet her and see some of her work and to give her some fabric for your quilt which is beautiful.
Thank you for all you do and much healing energy is sent to you for a complete and speedy recovery. Your piece is beautiful, I use paper as well in my pieces. I crumple it until it feels like fabric.

  8. I love the head and the stitching in this piece! Coincidentally, I just finished a sketchbook ing summer school today, mostly pen and ink, nothing to do with textiles, that covered texture and monochromatic colour schemes. This reminds me so much of what I've learned, and how closely aligned sketchbooking and textiles are, as you and Linda always remind us. It's also prompted me to get back to work on your Creative Sketchbook course! Can't wait to see more work! Take care, Laura; we all think of you often@

  10. Wow, this is a brilliant piece. I love the way the stitched line plays against the drawn lines in the head. I had just watched your video where you demonstrated the mono print technique on the huge sheet of Perspex and your discussion on how to stitch over the mono print without loosing the beautiful lines. As always You did it perfectly. So sorry not to see you at the FOQ but more important you look after yourself and do what you need to take care of yourself. Sending you wishes and prayers for strength and stamina through the chemo and for complete and speedy healing.
